Name:  Humboldt Penguin

Range:
South American coast of Chile and Peru.

Habitat:
Rocky shores, especially near cliffs.

Description:
Streamlined torpedo-shaped body with short black and white feathers, usually between 7-9 lbs. and standing about 27 inches tall when full grown. Reddish-brown eyes.

Adaptations/Habitat:
Flipper-type wings which make them fast swimmers: usually swim 4-5 mph but can have the occasional burst up to 15 mph (4x the fastest a human can swim!)

Breeding/Growth:
Peak activity from April-May and September-October. Females lay two eggs within 2-4 days, and both parents incubate the eggs, which hatch in about 40-42 days.

Diet:
Primarily sardines and anchovies, some crustaceans, and squid.
